Bono Launches (RED) WIRE on World AIDS DayNew Download Site, Exclusive Songs from The Killers, Sheryl Crow
In an effort to eradicate worldwide suffering from HIV/AIDS while giving music fans something new and exciting, U2's Bono launches (RED) WIRE.
Dubbed, “An online music magazine that saves lives,” (RED) WIRE offers more than just a few great music downloads. For a small monthly subscription fee of $5 US/ 4£, music fans can register with (RED) WIRE and download exclusive material from a host of today’s hottest acts including The Killers, R.E.M., Sheryl Crow and John Legend with more artists signing on every month. (RED) WIRE Delivers Directly to iTunesThe subscription site will also offer new music from up and coming acts as well as feature news articles and other music-related merchandise for the small fee. Every Wednesday, (RED) WIRE delivers new music directly to customers’ iTunes via the (RED) WIRE player as well as “A fun or inspiring piece that's not music – a short video of someone telling a story, a slideshow of great photography, someone reading something they love,” according to the official website. In exchange, money collected by this site helps buy medicine to keep people living with HIV/AIDS alive in some of the world’s poorest regions in Africa. Bono and (RED)The new site branches from the continuing effort of Bono’s (RED) business model created to raise money as well as awareness for the Global Fund that helps fight HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. Popular products such as Apple’s iPod, Starbucks Coffee, Dell Computers and the Gap Clothing Store offer exclusive items in the color red that cost the same as regular products but portions of the profits go to help the Global Fund with its cause. People who sign up for (RED) WIRE also receive frequent updates from the people in Africa who benefit from the medicine, giving music fans not only unprotected digital files that can be played on any MP3 player or burned to CD, but also a chance to connect with other people a world away living with one of the world’s most deadly diseases. World AIDS DayThe site will launch on December 1, 2008, otherwise known as World AIDS Day. Now in it’s 20th anniversary, World AIDS Day, hopes to bring global attention to the AIDS epidemic. While much has been done since 1988 and great strides have been taken to combat the disease, much more remains to be done. (RED) WIRE is one way music fans can help rid the world of AIDS or at the very least, ease the suffering of those inflicted directly or indirectly. By signing up early, before launch date, music fans get the first two issues for free.
