Britney's Womanizer Breaks 2 RecordsSpears single Leaps to top of Billboard Hot 100 Chart, Bests Mariah
After a slow debut at number 96 on the Billboard Hot 100, Britney Spears' new single "Womanizer" soars all the way to number one, shattering several records
Spears’ comeback has been a long and winding road which began last year with her neo-electronic album “Blackout”. But in the face of her comeback proper, Spears not only jumps 95 places to land at number one with her brand new single, “Womanizer”, she breaks the record set last week by T.I for the biggest jump to number one in history. According to Billboard, T.I leaped from 80 to 1 on last week’s chart with "Live Your Life", breaking the record he had set only a few weeks prior when he spring-boarded 71-1 with his track "Whatever You Like". But this week Spears breaks that record, soaring 96 – 1 to claim the second biggest track of her career. Womanizer Most Downloaded SongSpears also shatters the record for most download sales in an opening week. That record was set just last spring by Mariah Carey. In it’s opening week, Carey’s “Touch My Body” sold more downloads than any other song in history, shooting it straight to the top. But this week, fuelled by download sales reaching over 280,000, “Womanizer” becomes the biggest one-week seller of all time in digital format. By comparison, last year, Spears placed her last top ten record “Gimme More” at number three with a then career best first week sales tally of just under 180 000 units. Britney Spears’ Top Ten SongsThough Spears has had a lengthy pop career filled with top ten songs that stretches back to 1999, and has overcome personal breakdowns on the road to her full comeback, “Womanizer” marks only the second time she has reached the summit of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Her only other number one single was her debut record “Baby… One more Time”. Since then she has had a handful of top ten songs including “Gimme More” which peaked at number 3 in 2007, “Toxic” which hit number 9 in 2004, “Oops!...I Did It Again”, a number 9 hit in 2000 and “(You Drive Me) Crazy” which just inched in at number 10 in 1999. Spears has also charted with other tracks that fared well in the top 20 as well as other format charts. If “Womanizer” indicates the career comeback Spears had hoped for, she couldn’t have asked for more than a new single that not only breaks two chart records but gives her a second number one single. MTV For The RecordJust before the release of her new album, Spears speaks to MTV about her personal trauma and what was going on in her head during her very public meltdown. The interview, ‘For the Record’ airs on MTV November 30 at 10 p.m. "Womanizer" appears on Britney Spears’ upcoming album Circus, set for release on Jive records December 2.
