Moby releases a new single from his upcoming album Last Night, to hit the streets on April 1st, 2008. “Disco Lies” is available now as a digital download on iTunes or as a selection on the Cloverfield soundtrack.
Moby’s new concept album Last Night strings together thumping beats and early 80’s rhythms with a purely New York Disco feel to it. Gone are the days of remixing soul tracks into house club beats, and high profile celebrity collaborations.
On Last Night, Moby chose to use up and coming vocalists to fuel his music. “Disco Lies” has a sweaty tribal vibe and features rich vocals from an anonymous female singer over a bouncy beat popular in the dark clubs of New York.
Disco Lies to Alice
According to a December 5th, 2007 blog entry on the official Moby Website, he refers to the new album as being "a lot more dance oriented and electronic than my last few albums, probably as a result of all of the dj'ing I’ve been doing lately.”
While “Last Night” is his first studio album of new material since 2005’s Hotel which featured one disc of trance-oriented material and a second disc of chilled out grooves, Moby has been busy playing small venues around his native New York, namely “Degenerates” sets at New York’s famed Hiro Ballroom.
Disco Lies was preceded by the first official release from the new album, “Alice”, in December of 2007. This harder edged single features Aynzil and the 419 Squad on vocals rapping old school style over a dark electronic and hip hop-spliced beat. Alice is a harder swallow than new single “Disco Lies” and more reminiscent of Moby’s guitar days on Animal Rights, without the bitterness.
Last Night “has some interesting guest vocalists,” Moby continues on his website. “my favorite guest is the rapper on 'I love to move in here'. his name is grandmaster caz, and he was one of the writers of 'rappers delight'. he's been rapping since 1975, and I’m really happy to have him on the record."
Disco Lies is featured in the runaway hit movie Cloverfield and is available on the official Cloverfield movie soundtrack or as a single download on iTunes, 7digital and other digital music retailers.
No stranger to soundtracks, Moby’s music lends itself nicely to moving images. He has had music feature in The Beach (Porcelain) and all three ‘Bourne” movies. Television and movies have, in reverse, inspired Moby’s music as well. His first British hit single “Go” incorporates the theme music to the David Lynch mind melt “Twin Peaks” and James Bond movies inspired Moby to rework the opening theme into a full on electronic trip. “James Bond Theme” was ultimately refused by the studio as the official song to any Bond movie.
If "Disco Lies" and "Alice" are any indication, Last Night should be one to remember.
Fans of "Disco Lies" should check out Crystal Castles, the self-titled debut from Toronto electronic act.
