Grammy Nominations Best Electronic/Dance AlbumNods for Brazilian Girls, Daft Punk, Kylie Minogue, Moby & Robyn
Grammy never disappoints when it releases its list of nominations. Head scratchers this year in the Best Electronic/Dance Album include Daft Punk and Brazilian Girls
2008 had some fantastic dance/ techno album releases, but despite modern classic electronic discs by Portishead, Nine Inch Nails, Armin Van Buuren and at the very least, Madonna, Grammy plays it safe with dance veterans Daft Punk (for their live album) and relative unknowns, Brazilian Girls. Under the dance music umbrella, Grammy nominates songs in the Best Dance Recording category and Best Electronic/ Dance Album for full length players. Best Electronic/Dance AlbumThis award is destined for vocal or instrumental albums only. Since this category is for the album that shaped the dancefloor in 2008, two albums, New York City by Brazilian Girls and Alive 2007 by Daft Punk deserve the nod the least – so they’ll probably win. Cyndi Lauper broke out of her slump in 2008 by releasing one of the best albums of the year and her career, Bring Ya To The Brink. Sounding like a night at Studio 54, Lauper hops, jumps and makes love to the dancefloor on this dynamite album. Bring Ya To The Brink wears it’s title well and outshines even bonafide dance queen Kylie Minogue, whose own X also gets a nod. Moby and Robyn NominatedAlso breaking a creative slump in 2008, Moby jammed a night out in New York into 60 minutes of hit and miss dance classics on Last Night. While he suffers from the post Play letdown, even 10 years after that milestone album, Moby proved on Last Night that he can still have fun while crafting great songs that force feet to migrate to sweaty downtown clubs. Robyn all but disappeared after her brief stint as the girl next door pop princess in the late 1990’s. Re-emerging in 2005 with a self-titled comeback (that took 3 more years to be released in the US), the Swedish starlet proved you can have a face and a brain too, all the while making undisputed dance pop magic. Several UK top 40 hits later, including the number one smash “Every Heartbeat”, Robyn finally gets the credit in the US she deserves. Best Electronic/Dance AlbumBrazilian Girls - New York City Daft Punk - Alive 2007 Cyndi Lauper - Bring Ya To The Brink Kylie Minogue - X Moby - Last Night Robyn – Robyn It’s easier to predict earthquakes than a Grammy winner. If Grammy pulls another last minute whammy, all bets would be on Daft Punk winning the night. Either way, 2008 produced these fantastic Dance / Electronic albums that each deserve such high esteem. Grammy nominates discs in its Best Electronic/Dance Album category for CDs released October 1, 2007 through September 30, 2008.
