Kylie Minogue Boombox ReviewRemix Album with New Order, Fischerspooner, Chemical Brothers & Mylo
Twenty years after first breaking onto the dancefloor, Kylie Minioque releases Boombox, a remix album containing the highlights of her hits since 2000.
For an artist who has made a career of crafting floor friendly chart toppers, a remix album, while often redundant, comes long after due. Gathering the best of Kylie’s remixed hits, Boombox contains a who's who of celebrity remixers trying their hand at her tracks. Like most remix albums, some tracks shine, while others fizzle faster than a diet coke in the sun. Can’t Get Blue Monday Out of My MindBoombox opens with an infectious mash up of "Can't Get You Out of My Mind" with New Order's "Blue Monday". The track made its famous debut during her 2002 performance at the Brit Awards of that year. In the history of mash ups, this one comes close to perfection - only outshined by the brilliance of The Freelance Hellraiser's mashup"A Stroke of Genius" (Christina vs The Strokes). "Can't Get Blue Monday Out of My Mind" imbues the beauty of a remix – the art of recreating someone’s work to make something new, exciting and possibly better than the original. Despite collecting a top list of remixers including Fischerspooner, The Knuckleheadz and Sebastien Leger, the beauty and re-invention of "Can't Get Blue Monday Out of My Mind" doesn't find an equal on Boombox and the rest of the album plays like a bus ride on a dirt road. Some stand out moments include The Chemical Brothers' stripped down re-interpretation of "Slow", the glossy revamped Britrocka remix of "The One" and fun throwback to 70’s era club pastiche “Your Disco Needs You (Casino Radio & Club Mix)”, which sounds strikingly similar to the Pet Shop Boys remake of "Go West". But as a whole, Boombox sounds better taken in small doses. Boombox - Kylie Minogue vs. Paula AbdulEven though Kylie has been making pop/dance hits for over twenty years, Boombox concentrates on Kylie since Light Years, when she made her comeback with the disco revival "Spinning Around", co-written by Paula Abdul of American Idol fame. Alongside tracks from Light Years, Boombox incorporates cuts from Fever, her most successful album this decade and the one which revived her career in the US, Body Language and last year's underappreciated X. Like many 'greatest hits' albums released since the 80's, Boombox contains one new track that shares the title of the album. "Boombox (LA Riots Remix)", a sugary slice of Europop which oddly also appears to be the slated comeback track for the aforementioned Abdul. Her version of "Boombox" can now be heard streaming on the Paula Abdul official website and is scheduled for official release as the lead single to her upcoming comeback album.
