Many high profile acts release new albums this year, including Lily Allen, Franz Ferdinand, Depeche Mode and Prince.

Now that dance floors have been swept free of New Year's confetti, and burnt out Christmas trees lay buried under a snow bank at the curb, its time to check out the albums released in the early part of 2009.

For a more up-to-date list of albums coming out in Fall 2009, dance over here.

  • Franz Ferdinand - Tonight: Franz Ferdinand

Following 2005’s You Could Have It So Much Better, Franz Ferdinand debut new single “Ulysses” on January 19. Produced by Dan Carey who has worked with Hot Chip, the new single and album continue to merge guitar pop with light, fun pseudo disco. Release date January 29, 2009.

  • The Prodigy - Invaders Must Die

They gave away title track to their new album at the beginning of December and if it indicates how the rest of the album plays out, Invaders Must Die picks up hard hitting techno rock for a new generation. Release date March 3, 2009.

Idol winner Clarkson struck gold with her Breakaway album in 2004, but when she chose to break free from the mold and Clive Davis, follow up My December, received a frosty reception. On January 19, she releases her brand new track, "My Life Would Suck Without You," from her as yet untitled new album on RCA. Release date March 17, 2009.

  • Pet Shop Boys – Yes

Up for the Outstanding Contribution to Music award at the 2009 Brits in February, the Pet Shop Boys deliver their new album a month later. Co-produced in part by Xenomania, the 11-track set picks up where 2006’s return to the dance floor Fundamental left off. Release date March 23, 2009.

  • MSTRKRFT - Fist Of God

Montreal techno/dance masters release their follow up to their hugely successful debut album with more cutting edge dance floor anthems sure to fill the dance floors of the world well into Summer 2009. Release date March 25, 2009

  • Prince – MPLSOUND, Lotus Flower and Elixir

Two years after his last studio album, Plant Earth, the ever prolific purple one releases three brand new albums. According to Billboard Magazine, MPLSOUND features a more electronica-tinged sound whereas Lotus Flower springs for a more guitar-rock feel. Elixir, an album Prince worked on with Bria Valente will also see the light in 2009. Prince plans to release the albums via his new website and is in talks with major labels for physical distribution of all three albums.

  • Michael Jackson – TBA

Once known for his dance moves and killer dance tunes, Jackson's life has since become a media circus. Still holding the title of biggest album of all time for Thriller, he hasn't released any new material since 2001's daftly titled disaster Invincible. With the reports of his fatal lung disease cleared up, he may have time to finally finish the album he has reportedly been working on in collaboration with Akon and will.i.am. Release Date - TBA

Also scheduled for release in early 2009, new albums by electronica royalty Depeche Mode, sassy Brit pop from Lily Allen and the long anticipated new album from U2.
