World's Best Techno DJs

DJ Mag today announced the rankings in its annual readers poll of the world’s top 100 DJs for 2007 -- though the announcement was not without a little bit of scandal.

This is the 11th year that DJ Mag has conducted the polls, the most influential in the industry. It isn’t fans who particularly care about these votes (although the polls do provide the perfect opportunity to decry this ranking or celebrate that one via blogs and forums); it’s the DJs’ booking agents.

Because of the breadth of its dance-music coverage and its sheer longevity, the UK-based mag is well respected from an editorial standpoint. From a fiscal standpoint, the magazine’s annual poll has come to represent a kind of industry Blue Book of a DJ’s market value. The number of voters rises with each passing year, topping out for 2007 at some 345,000 from more than 200 countries.

A DJ whose agent can proclaim him or her to be “#7 on DJ Mag’s Top 100!” will find it easier to book venues and can more readily justify an enormous fee for appearances than he would or could do otherwise, since the poll results are assumed by all to speak with the collective voice of the club-filling, drink-buying everyman.

The cycle feeds on itself: the more venues a DJ plays worldwide, the more recognizable he becomes; assuming he always brings his best (or the drinks are always strong and plentiful), the more fans he amasses and—voilà—the higher his name climbs in the annual polls.
